Trafford Park is located opposite Salford Quays on the southern side of the Manchester Ship Canal.
Financier Ernest Terah Hooley bought the area from the Trafford family in 1896. It was the first planned industrial estate in the world and is the biggest in Europe. Trafford Park is almost entirely surrounded by water. The Bridgewater canal forms its boundaries on the northeast and northwest, whilst the Manchester Ship Canal forms its southeast and southwest boundaries.
During the first and second world wars Trafford Park became a major supplier of materials for the war effort. Rolls Royce Merlin engines, for use in Spitfires and Lancaster bombers, were produced in the area. At its peak in 1945 an estimated 75,000 people were employed in Trafford Park. However the period between the 1960’s and 1970’s saw a rapid decline in manufacturing and consequently employment in Trafford Park.
The Trafford Park Urban Development Corporation, formed in 1987, breathed new life back into the area. By 1998, in just 11 short years, the park attracted 1,000 new companies generating 28,000 new jobs. As of 2008 there are an estimated 35,000 people employed in the area
